The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 26

Mia looked up as the door to her room slid open. Heero stood on the threshold silently staring at her, and waiting for an invitation. Mia patted the bed she was sitting on and her father accepted the offer. They sat in uncomfortable silence for a moment, before Heero looked over at his daughter.

"I'm sorry Amelia." He whispered softly.

"It's not your fault any more than it is mine. We didn't ask for this." She answered without looking up at him.

"How are you holding up?"

"Good. Trowa talked with me earlier today." Another silence fell between them. "I'm sorry for what I said to you in the barn the other night. I didn't really mean it. You've been more than a father to me and I just wanted to say thank you for putting up with everything I've put you through." She looked up at him with tears brimming her eyes. "I'm proud to be your daughter. . .and I'm glad that I am." With that, she threw herself into his arms and buried her face deeply into his shirt. "You have to come back tomorrow. You have to. I want you to be in my life. . .I need you to be."

Heero lightly rubbed his daughter's back as he held her. He forced back his tears, trying to be strong like he always had been for her. For the last fifteen years, he tried his best to keep her at a distant for fear of getting too close; now he wished he hadn't. Though she had lived with him, he didn't know her. He didn't know his own daughter the way a father should know. . .the way Trowa knew her. As he held her, he remembered all the times that he was cruel to her; all the times that he had snapped at her, and was harsh toward her. He wanted to apologize for all that. He wanted to make things right. The only problem was the possibility that he had waited too late to do it.

Wu Fei stared at the boy sitting on the edge of the roof. He walked over to his son and sat next to him. Ever since Mia was informed of what was truly going on, she refused to even so much as look at Sam, let alone talk to him. Wu Fei lightly pushed a strand of the jet black hair from the downcast face.

"Are you okay?"

"I really care about her father. She means a lot to me, but she won't talk to me. She won't let me apologize or anything."

"She's just going to need some time. Learning about her origin; that people are trying to turn her into an experiment; and that Heero is her father. . .it's a lot for a fifteen year old kid to handle. Especially when it was thrown at her all at once."

"Do you think that she'll ever forgive me?"

"You know her better than I do." Sam nodded.

"Would it disgrace you if I asked to quit the Preventers?"

"If it's what you truly want. . .no." The young coal eyes turned toward the older pair. "I know I pushed this on you. You didn't really have a choice, but if you don't want to stay, then it will change nothing between us. You'll always be my son." A smile pulled at Sam's lips for a moment until a thought occurred to him.

"Will Heero be all right tomorrow?"

"I don't know."

"I want to help them. Isn't there anything we can do?"

"At this point, no. We have to abide by the rules."

"And that's why Heero is taking this into his own hands. . ." Sam stared at the city below. More than anything, he wanted to prove to Mia that his feelings for her were genuine. . .but he wasn't sure how to do that. At that moment, the door leading into the building busted open, and all attention was turned toward Mia, who was standing on the threshold. Tears were in her colbat eyes as she stared at Sam first, then Wu Fei. "What's wrong?"

"Trowa's gone."

"What?" Sam gasp as he jumped to his feet.

"Are you sure?" Wu Fei wondered and stood. Mia only nodded and the two Preventers ran over to the door, and down to the surveillance room. Duo and Heero were already there rewinding the surveillance tapes. The Chinese man stood behind his friends. "When did it happen?"

"I'm not sure." Heero answered and brought up the camera that was posted outside the room that he and the Latin shared. He rewound the tape to the time that he had left to speak with Mia. The over emotional teenager had slumped into a seat next to her father, trying her best to hold back her tears. Instead of watching the tape, her eyes were glued to Heero's face. "Damn it!" He grit his teeth to control the rage building in him.

"What happen?" Sam asked quickly. He didn't see anything wrong with the tape that they were watching.

"Whoever took him, froze the cameras."

"How can you tell?" Heero brought up all the tapes of that night. Each one of them had been frozen twice; the one before Trowa's room once. Sam watched the tapes closely, and his question was answered from the viewing. Heero turned from the screens, trying to control himself.

"Heero. We'll get him back." Duo tried to soothed. Heero just shook his head and stormed from the room. Knowing the anger in the colbat eyes, Duo sprang from his seat and followed his friend. Mia ran after the two men. "Heero, you need to calm down." The American attempted as he grabbed Heero's arm. The Japanese man spun to face the braided man. There was a wild look to his eyes that Duo hadn't seen in seventeen years. In truth, if scared him. If the look had returned, there was no telling what Heero was going to do.

"Protect Mia for me."

"Heero, let me help you."

"You can by protecting her. I know I'm going to lose Trowa, but I won't her." Mia stopped a few feet from the men."

"Look, you can't barge in there without a plan."

"They fucked with my life long enough. I'm not sitting back and taking their shit any more. If those bastards want to play. . .we'll play."

"You're not thinking clearly."

"Let go of my arm before I make you."

"Heero, just listen. If. . ." Duo never had a chance to finish as Heero roughly seized his arm and tore it from its hold. Now freed, the Japanese man continued down the long hall.

"Heero." Mia squeaked, but wasn't heard. Duo glanced back at the girl before running after Heero and placing himself in front of the determined ex-soldier.

"What about Mia? Are you going to leave her with no one?" Heero ignored him and continued walking. Duo had to jog to keep up with the faster pace, but he managed. All the while, he kept talking, hoping that he would say something that would stir sense into the grief stricken man. "You said so yourself that they will kill Trowa. They'll kill you too, then who will be left to protect her Heero? And even if you succeed, who will be here for her afterwards? You know what it's like to be left alone Heero. You know that better than anyone. Are you going to force her into the life that you were forced into? Isn't that why you and Trowa went through all that shit to save her? To give her the life that you never had? Well, guess what buddy? That's where you're going to send her. Do you think Trowa would want you to do this?" Heero stopped suddenly and turned to look back at his friend and daughter. "Look at her Heero. She's scared shitless. Go to her. Be a father to her. . .not a soldier. This building is full of people that can protect her, how many can be her dad?"

Heero stared at the girl, and his heart went out to her. The tears were spilling down her cheeks as she stood trembling in the hall looking after him. He continued to gaze on the beautiful girl that he and Trowa had raised together. It was their legacy, and the only one they had. He wouldn't lose her. Not to this, or anyone. That in mind, he walked over to the girl and pulled her into an embrace. He held her tightly as if he didn't want to let go. She returned the embrace, trying to be as strong as him, but failing miserably.

"Don't go." She whispered softly and he pulled her from his hold. Tenderly, he wiped the tears from his face.

"I have to."

"No."

"If I don't, they'll kill him. Right now, it's me they're after. . .that's why they took him. I need you to be strong for me Mia. I know you can be. . .you have this far."

"I don't want to lose you." She sniffled and looked into his eyes.

"You won't. I promise you that I'm coming back. I will survive this Mia." He kissed her forehead and turned to continue with his mission.

"Heero, please don't." She cried, too paralyzed with fear and anguish to follow. "Please, Heero, don't." Heero closed his eyes, and pushed away her voice as tears started to dampen his eye lashes.

"You don't have to do this." Duo announced as Heero walked pass him.

"Yes, I do."

"Heero!" Mia called down the hall after him. She searched her mind for some way to stop him. She tried to think of something, anything. "Daddy, don't go." The three words stung at Heero's heart, but he forced himself not to look back. He had to go. If he didn't, then they will continue to haunt her, and her children. Mia fell to her knees, crying heavily into her hands. At that moment, strong hands were placed on either of her shoulders as Sam kneeled next to her. Desperate for comfort, she allowed him to hold her tightly.

Wu Fei watched the Japanese man as he ignored his crying daughter. Though it was heart wrenching for him, he admired Heero's strength. Heero was right. If he didn't act now, there was a chance of the enemy winning. For Mia's sake, that chance couldn't be risked. Duo didn't fully understand it yet, as he ran after his pig headed friend, hoping to talk sense into him. Once the two were gone, Wu Fei looked down at his son and Mia. The teenager was shaking violently. . .a little too violently.

"Mia, are you all right?" He asked quickly, but she didn't respond. Hearing the worry in his father's tone, Sam pulled from his girlfriend to notice that her eyes had rolled back into her head.

"Mia!"
